Legislation to establish Jan. 28 each year as National Recognition Day for teachers in memory of Sharon Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who died in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, was introduced Wednesday in the House.

“However painful it is to remember, we must always cherish the pioneering spirit that led Christa McAuliffe and our brave astronauts to break the barriers of the unknown,” Rep. Gary L. Ackerman (D-N.Y.), the bill’s sponsor, said.
