Local News in Brief : Burbank Schools, City to Fund Summer Jobs

The Burbank City Council and the Burbank Unified School District have informally agreed to pool resources to finance a $200,000 summer employment program for low- and middle-income youths, school Supt. Wayne Boulding said Friday.

In previous years, the council and the school district ran individual programs budgeted for about $100,000 each, said Councilwoman Mary Kelsey. Thursday, at the second quarterly meeting between city and school district members, Burbank council members agreed to give the school district $100,000 in community development block grant funds to operate the program. The council is expected to formally approve the funding at an upcoming meeting, Kelsey said.

Boulding said the remaining $100,000 is expected to come from the Verdugo Private Industry Council through the Joint Training Partnership Act, a federal program which replaced CETA, the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act.

About 104 youths between 14 and 21 years old will work for the city in the summer in departments such as parks and recreation and maintenance, Boulding said. The program will also place youths in clerical jobs and teach them office skills.

The program, which will run from July 7 to Aug. 29, will be publicized through newspaper advertising and announcements at high schools, Boulding said.
