Orange League : Brea-Olinda Averts Upset, Rallies to Edge Valencia, 52-49

Valencia High School held a 47-46 lead over Brea-Olinda with 1:29 remaining, but the Tigers couldn’t hold on for an upset as the Wildcats rallied to take a 52-49 victory Friday night at Placentia.

With 1:29 remaining, Valencia’s David LaRue apparently drove the distance of the court and scored a layup that would have put the Tigers ahead by three. But the basket was nullified because an official had called a foul on Brea in the backcourt. Valencia Coach Ray Rodriguez argued that the basket should have counted, but the call was not changed.

Valencia’s Dennis Burbank missed the free throw, and Brea got the rebound. Brea’s Kevin Walker was then fouled three times in the closing minute, and made six free throws as the Wildcats (6-0, 18-4) won.
