The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Bethesda, Md., will spend more than $1 billion for medical research over the next five years, employing 900 scientists at 22 laboratories in 14 states, the institute has reported. It is establishing the labs at universities and university hospitals, said Dr. Donald S. Fredrickson, president of the institute. The institute was established in 1953 by industrialist Howard R. Hughes. Last December, it sold its major asset, the Hughes Aircraft Co., to General Motors Corp. for $5 billion.
