San Diego County supervisors Tuesday increased welfare payments for couples and families and for individuals who are placed in board-and-care homes.

Without discussion, the Board of Supervisors also agreed unanimously, with Supervisor George Bailey absent, to increase the allowed value of an automobile that can be owned by recipients of general relief.

The moves came two weeks after board members voted to increase the monthly general relief grant for individuals from $120 to $225, the first increase in a decade.

Tuesday’s actions put the grants for married couples at $450 and enacted a sliding scale that provides grants of up to $966 for families of 10 or more.

Individuals who are confined to private board-and-care homes will now be entitled to $531 a month, up from $303.

Applicants for general relief will also now be eligible for aid even if they own cars worth as much as $1,500, rather than the $500 that had been the standard.

Recipients will now be able to own a burial plot of any value. Previously, such plots or trusts were limited to $500.
