‘Crisis in Black America’

Share

We are not negating the fact that Will has the right to speak about issues affecting “Black America,” yet, we hope that a person of his position would speak more responsibly to the issue.

We resent Will’s condescending attitude toward black people. For example, he implies that black youth are “sexually reckless” and are the sole cause for the “Crisis in Black America”--and all of this without any feelings of “guilt.” While we agree that black people should be held accountable for themselves, we also believe that society is mutually responsible for this “crisis.” By this, we mean that if society offered black people (and in general all people, Native Americans, Latinos, etc.) a fair education and non-discrimination in the workplace, black people would be able to lead more productive lives without government handouts.

Hence, there is a dual challenge to black people and society to be more responsible; the responsibility is 50/50.
