Los Angeles County supervisors have asked that an Antelope Valley street used to transport the space shuttle to Edwards Air Force Base be renamed “Challenger Way” in memory of the craft’s astronauts. “I can think of no better way to honor the memory of the Challenger crew,” Supervisor Mike Antonovich said. The supervisors asked the county Road Department to study renaming 10th Street East from Avenue M in Palmdale north through Lancaster to the Kern County line. The space shuttle, assembled at Rockwell International facilities in Palmdale, was transported north on 10th Street East through Lancaster to Edwards Air Force Base, where it was shipped aboard a jumbo jet to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
