Pope John Paul II journeyed today to the land where the apostle known as “Doubting Thomas” first introduced Christianity to Asia and celebrated a seaside Mass with more than 500,000 people.

Sunburned from five days in the Indian sun, John Paul began to show signs of fatigue. He yawned once, very broadly, during the Mass on Marina Beach in Madras, before the largest crowd of his India visit.

In a speech to non-Christian religious leaders, John Paul called on all religions of India to end their disputes and unite to fight human suffering.
