The Region : Youth Shelter Approved
County supervisors voted to help set up a shelter to keep troubled youngsters from ending up on the streets. Under the pilot project, the county will assist in creation of a shelter for about 30 homeless teen-agers. Only eight private centers offering a total of 18 beds now exist for such youths--most of whom are runaways who have not committed any crimes. Leonard Schneiderman, dean of the UCLA School of Social Work, presented to the board results of a yearlong study about runaways, which found existing government and privately run programs are inadequate and that coordination between agencies that deal with such youths is poor.
