‘Humans in Space’
Your editorial, “Humans in Space,” was right on target.
You reminded us that one tragic accident “should not deter this nation from extending its commitment to space” in spite of the realization that “technology must always mirror man’s imperfections.”
This inevitability of error is a major message of the space shuttle tragedy. The awareness of human fallibility should never deter us from pioneering efforts that might enrich human knowledge or welfare; but it ought to convince President Reagan and Soviet Chairman Mikhail Gorbachev that the elimination of nuclear weaponry is the only certain way of avoiding an accidental launching that would endanger not seven precious lives but all humanity.
