The population of Simi Valley and the surrounding area is expected to exceed 100,000 by the year 1990, says a report by the city’s Community Development Department.

The year-end report estimates that 90,640 people live within the city limits. When outlying areas are included, the population is 93,859, it says. At the current growth rate, the population, including outlying areas, will be 103,220 by 1990, the report predicts.

The population of a city determines the number of building permits it can approve to remain within the population-growth guidelines of the county water-quality management plan and air-quality management plan.

In 1985, Simi Valley approved building permits for 1,020 residential units, the report says.

A report published in December by Security Pacific Bank said the total value of projects for which building permits were issued in Simi Valley in 1985 was $194.6 million, higher than the value of projects approved by any other Ventura County community.

The value of projects for which building permits are issued is a leading indicator of development in a community.
