The Nation : 27 Held in Hormel Strike
Twenty-seven striking meatpackers and their supporters were arrested after the National Guard briefly blocked access to the Geo. A Hormel & Co. plant in Austin, Minn. The strikers attempted to make citizen’s arrests of a city police officer and at least two guardsmen. The demonstration came a day after Hormel officials and union leaders held their first meeting in three weeks, but reported no progress. About 1,500 union members went on strike Aug. 17 in a dispute over wages. Hormel hired replacement workers and reopened the plant on Jan. 13.
