A plane believed to be Soviet briefly violated Japanese airspace near the area where Soviet fighters shot down a South Korean jumbo jet in 1983. A Japanese air controller radioed a warning in Russian and two Japanese fighters scrambled after the intruding aircraft was detected on radar flying at 30,000 feet. The plane returned to international airspace after only 18 seconds in Japanese territory. The incident occurred near Rebun Island, off the main northern island of Hokkaido, about 35 miles south of where Soviet jets downed the South Korean airliner, killing all 269 people aboard.
