South African police used tear gas to break up a crowd of about 1,000 people singing freedom songs at the funeral of a 15-year-old girl killed last month. Residents of Kagiso township near Johannesburg said at least 22 people were arrested before and after the funeral. The police had imposed a ban on political speeches at the funeral. A Catholic nun said the girl was shot dead in a clash between police and youths meeting to encourage pupils to end a school boycott.
