Reagan’s State of Union Message

Share

President Reagan has pointed a new way for me to live high on the hog. All I need do is purchase assets on credit and then sell them off and pocket the money without paying off the loans. That’s exactly his proposition in selling off federal properties.

But I can’t entirely agree with your editorials (Feb. 6), “Now for the Hard Part” and “Look Before You Leap,” either. Most all government expenditures result in subsidies to some at the expense of others. The greatest subsidy of all is the money spent for national defense simply because those expenditures subsidize our American economy. With sewing machines, typewriters, VCRs and most every other item purchased in a store today being manufactured partially or wholly overseas, what would be left if we cut back the military budget, or worse yet, started purchasing our military hardware elsewhere?

For those who think our economy can forever withstand the rape by the special interests and our elected representatives, I have some beautiful land in Florida for sale.
