Matt Roy of Saranac Lake, N.Y., set an American two-man bobsled record as he guided his USA I sled to a win in the Lederle Two-Man Bobsled World Cup at the Olympic bobsled run at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Roy, with brakeman Jim Herberich of Winchester, Mass., aboard, recorded a time of 1 minute .01 seconds in his first run--the fastest time ever by an American sled on the mile-long course and the second fastest ever at Mount Van Hoevenberg behind the 59.75 seconds recorded by Ralph Pichler of Switzerland in 1983.

Roy and Herberich added a 1:01.05 in their second run for a four-run time of 4:02.79.

The win was only the second by an American bobsledder on the World Cup circuit since it began two years ago.
