Chrysler will spend $280 million to retool a plant.

The nation’s third-largest auto maker agreed to spend the money on retooling its Trenton, Mich., engine plant after receiving a pledge on work-rule changes at the plant from the United Auto Workers. Union members in Trenton, concerned that Chrysler would build its new V-6 engine elsewhere, voted to negotiate work rules but not wages or benefits. Chrysler said a final agreement would prevent an employment drop at Trenton from 2,200 hourly jobs to about 700 by 1990 and would create 500 parts-making jobs at Chrysler plants around the country.
