Com Systems Earnings Plummet

Com Systems, a long-distance telephone company based in Van Nuys, reported that its earnings fell 70% in its third quarter ended Dec. 31 to $216,000, or 5 cents a share, from the same period a year earlier. The company said its sales dropped 30% to $5.8 million for the quarter.

According to the company, last year’s earnings were higher because they included the results of Tel-America Communications Services, a North Carolina company that Com Systems sold last March.

For the nine months ended Dec. 31, net income was down 96% to $40,000, or 1 cent a share, on sales of $17.5 million, down 22% from the corresponding period the year before.
