A U.S. District Court jury recessed without a verdict after a day of sifting through reams of evidence and five weeks’ worth of testimony to determine if two University of Georgia officials violated the free-speech rights of a former English instructor.
The five-woman, one-man jury, which deliberated for about 75 minutes after getting the case Monday afternoon, returned to court at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to continue considering Dr. Jan Kemp’s lawsuit against Georgia Developmental Studies Director Leroy Ervin and Virginia Trotter, the university’s vice president for academic affairs.
Kemp charged in her suit that she was demoted from coordinator of the remedial English program, and later fired as an instructor, in retaliation for speaking out against preferential treatment of student athletes.
