Sikh military personnel will be allowed to wear turbans and other traditional Sikh garb while serving in the Canadian Forces, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

The change follows a request made by a 20-year-old Sikh recruit now attending training school in Nova Scotia. He is “the only Sikh we know of in the forces,” a spokesman said.

The recruit, whose name has not been released, will not be forced to cut his hair and can wear the traditional uncut beard, steel bangle, turban and hairpin, loincloth, and carry a ceremonial dagger.
