Black Launches His Bid for Michigan Governor

DETROIT — Wayne County Executive William Lucas launched his bid Wednesday to become the nation’s first elected black governor, saying he expects to work hard for Michigan’s black vote.
“What we do here today has a meaning far beyond ourselves, for we have the opportunity to write and make American history,” said the recent convert to the Republican Party.
