Arctic cold today sent temperatures across the Midwest plummeting to record lows for the second straight day. Readings of 7 below zero in Ottumwa, Iowa, and Rockford, Ill., set record lows. The lowest temperature nationwide was 18 below at Waterloo, Iowa.
“It’s not fun when it gets below zero. I survive by thinking about April and May and the summertime,” said Gerald Herman Jr. of Bismarck, N.D., where the mercury hovered at 8 degrees at midday.
Temperatures in the 30s stretched as far south as northern Florida, where Gainesville reported 39 degrees. It was zero in Paducah, Ky., the National Weather Service said.
Winds blowing across the Great Lakes picked up moisture and dropped a foot of new snow on western Pennsylvania and western New York state.
