Orange County College Baseball : UCI Scores Run in 8th to Edge Pomona

Tom Baine’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning scored Chris Gallego to give UC Irvine a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday afternoon at Pomona.

Gallego reached base on an error to lead off the eighth and advanced to third on Ed Clark’s third single of the game. Baine’s sacrifice fly made a winner of Craig Brink (2-0), who pitched eight-plus innings, allowing seven hits.

Doug Linton pitched the ninth to pick up his first save. He forced Bronco shortstop Marty Rivero to hit into a double play and struck out Keith Barrett to end the game.

Irvine (4-2) plays Nevada-Reno Friday afternoon at Irvine. Cal Poly Pomona (0-7) plays USC Thursday at home.

Southern California College 4, Whittier 0-- Tim Fortugno struck out 16 batters and allowed only one hit in seven innings to pick up his first victory for the Vanguards.

Howard Wellema led SCC with three hits including a double, a run batted in and a run scored. The Vanguards also benefitted from two Whittier errors in the second inning which led to two unearned runs.

The Vaguards, 3-0, play Occidental Thursday at home.

Arizona State 10, Chapman 7--Rick Mariucco broke a 3-3 tie with a bases-loaded double in the third inning as the Sun Devils won in Tempe.

The Sun Devils (4-2) trailed 3-1 in the third, but tied the game on two bases-loaded walks by losing pitcher Don Glisson (0-1) before the double by Mariucco.

Jim Arieas and Jeff Morrison hit home runs for Chapman, now 3-2.
