Dave Adolph, 48, the Chargers’ pro scouting director, was named defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns Thursday.

Adolph served the Browns for six years before joining the Chargers early last season. He was Cleveland’s interim defensive coordinator in 1984 after Marty Schottenheimer replaced Sam Rutigliano as head coach.

Adolph was the Chargers’ defensive coordinator for 12 games in 1985. He took over after Tom Bass was fired.

Adolph returned to his scouting job last month when the Chargers hired Ron Lynn as their new defensive coordinator.

The Chargers will open their 1986 exhibition schedule Saturday, Aug. 9, against the Dallas Cowboys at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

The schedule, announced Thursday by the club, also includes home games against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, Aug. 16, and the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, Aug. 29.

The Chargers will play the Rams in Anaheim on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Offensive tackle Jim Lachey, named the Chargers’ outstanding rookie of 1985, has contributed a football scholarship to the athletic department of his alma mater, Ohio State.

The endowment will annually generate a full-ride scholarship of up to $7,000 in Lachey’s name. The endowment is one of the three largest of its kind from an athlete to his alma mater, according to Lachey’s agent, Leigh Steinberg.
