HEAVENLY EVERLYS

“BORN YESTERDAY.” The Everly Brothers. Mercury. With an even stronger collection of songs than “EB ‘84,” the Everlys’ second LP since their ’83 reunion is as contemporary as the wry cowpunk of Rank and File’s “Amanda Ruth,” as unabashedly romantic as Mark Knopfler’s “Why Worry,” and as timeless as the heartbreak in Don Everly’s touching title tune. The unqualified classic of the bunch, though, is Bob Dylan’s previously unrecorded “Abandoned Love,” a tale of a failing relationship whose melancholy lyric is echoed in the Irish pipes played by the Chieftains’ Liam O’Flynn. In a couple of spots, producer Dave Edmunds may have added a few too many bricks to his wall of sound, but in general he has wisely kept the backgrounds simple, recognizing that the beauty of the Everlys’ harmonizing is production enough for any song.
