A group of Democrats studying the problems of rural America said Friday that if agriculture fails, so does the economy, and all sectors of society must join forces to help keep the family farm in business.

Members of the Democratic Policy Commission’s Regional Roundtable on the rural Economy said that support for farm families is needed from all sectors of the nation--such as political, economic and the community.

The nation must be made to realize that farming is the foundation of the economy, and if it falters, so does the economy, said Karen Merrick, mayor of Guttenberg, Iowa.

“The leadership of this party has to say, ‘We are one country,’ ” Merrick said.

“You can’t do anything unless you build coalitions in society to get a majority,” said Richard Bolling, former congressman of Missouri. “That’s the only way we’re going to get results.”

The Kansas City meeting is the first of four sessions the committee has scheduled around the nation for a look at the problems of rural communities.
