Spain Farmers Protest With 12,000 Tractors
Spanish farmers blocked roads with an estimated 12,000 tractors Saturday in a nationwide protest against European Communities farm policies, police said.
A spokesman for the Confederation of Farmers and Cattlemen, which represents 10% of Spain’s 1 million farmers, said they will take their protest to the cities today.
The farmers claim that the Spanish government has left them defenseless against competition from the Common Market. They are protesting the gradual lifting of subsidies on diesel fuel and the introduction of stricter quality standards for Spanish grain.
