The Luminaires are thrilled that New York philanthropist Mary Lasker has accepted to receive their second Luminaires Vision Award. Dr. Arnold Beckman was tapped in 1984.

Now, president Mrs. Lawrence C. Crowe and ways and means chairman Mrs. Donald Dickerson will unswathe the spotlights for their “Spring Visions” benefit luncheon March 20 in the Century Room of the Century Plaza Towers. It’s a fund-raiser for the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation, and with Mary Lasker and a fashion show by Michael Novarese and furs by Giba-Noblia, success is guaranteed.

Taking a major role, too, is Mrs. Gordon Crary, Luminaires founder and a dauntless supporter of the eye foundation established in 1947 by Carrie Estelle Doheny and dedicated to ophthalmology research, education, outpatient care at the Doheny Eye Medical Clinic and inpatient care at the Estelle Doheny Eye Hospital.

The history of medicine has been made by the men and women who have won Lasker Awards: 42 later won Nobel prizes.

Mrs. Lasker has also been active in the beautification of New York and Washington (10,000 azaleas along Pennsylvania Avenue). She also holds 10 honorary degrees and in 1969 received the Medal of Freedom Award, the United States’ highest civilian award.
