Members of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union have reached a $500,000 out-of-court settlement of their lawsuit against the Powerine Oil Co. Inc., a lawyer representing the union said. At issue was the company’s failure to honor a collective bargaining agreement after it filed for federal bankruptcy protection, union attorney Wally Knox said. The oil company, which in 1984 filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, agreed to pay the 186 union members who worked at its Santa Fe Springs plant about $2,000 each to settle the lawsuit, Knox said. “In a matter of weeks they’ll have the checks in their hands,” he said.
