McDonnell Douglas Information Systems Group, an amalgam of 11 high-technology companies with operating headquarters in Irvine, said Tuesday it has acquired a minority position in National Electronic Information Corp., a health claims electronic clearinghouse based in New York City.

In a written statement, McDonnell Douglas officials said the information systems group acquired an unspecified amount of NEIC Class A voting stock and will assume one seat on the NEIC board of directors.

Founded in 1981 by 11 life and health insurance companies, NEIC provides services to 39 commercial insurance carrier members, one Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan, 70 health claim vendors and 637 health care providers.

NEIC computer operations electronically collect claims data, validate the data against insurance carriers’ records and forward validated claims directly to the appropriate insurance carrier for payment.
