Volkswagen of America Inc. is recalling 77,000 Golf and GTI models to replace defective fuel tank assemblies.

Collisions involving the affected cars--1985 and early 1986 models--could cause gasoline leaks and the threat of fire, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

Ford Motor Co. also announced that it is recalling 9,400 1986-model Lincoln Continentals and Mark VIIs to rewire an electrical connection that could cause the brake fluid warning light to fail.

Both companies said no accidents or injuries had been reported because of the problems.
