Terrorists riding motor scooters shot and wounded a senior aide to Premier Bettino Craxi today when he stopped to buy a newspaper on his way to work.

One of the assailants, a woman, was shot and killed by the official’s bodyguard, a policeman who was driving him to the office.

Police said Antonio Da Empoli, 47, a counselor in charge of budget and economic planning in Craxi’s office, was attacked shortly after 9 a.m. near the Foreign Ministry in northern Rome.

Doctors said Da Empoli was wounded in the right elbow and in one leg, and would require a lengthy hospital stay.

In separate telephone calls to the Bologna office of the Rome daily La Repubblica and to the main office of Milan’s Corriere Della Sera, anonymous callers said the Fighting Communists Coalition carried out the attack.

The callers said Da Empoli had been shot for his part in drafting Italy’s 1986 budget, which they called “anti-worker.”
