San Diego Roundup : Women Run to Benefit Area YWCAs

More than 1,000 women are expected to run in the ninth annual L’eggs 10-kilometer and 2-mile fun run Saturday morning in Balboa Park. Proceeds from the race will benefit fitness programs at San Diego YWCAs.

In addition to the 10K and 2-mile runs, there will be a “Little L’eggs” quarter-mile fun run for girls 7 and under.

The quarter-mile run begins at 7:45, the 10K at 8 and the 2-mile at 8:05. For more information, call 296-0605.

Mickey Thompson’s Off-Road Championship Grand Prix makes its first appearance in the San Diego area March 1 for round three of this year’s races at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Series regulars, including Ivan Stewart of Lakeside, will compete on a special off-road course that will be constructed on the stadium’s playing field. It will include jumps, hairpin turns and other challenges usually faced in desert races. Off-road Grand Prix races later in the season will be at the Rose Bowl and the Coliseum.

The Athletic Injury Center will present a free seminar on plyometrics training at 7 p.m. next Thursday. Plyometrics is a method of power training involving jumping, leaping and stretching. Don Chu, a professor of sports medicine at Cal State Hayward and author of a book on the subject, will lead the discussion. The seminar, designed for coaches, athletes and trainers, will be at the center, located at 2650 Camino Del Rio North, Suite 101. For reservations and information, call 298-6615.
