Connors Still Expected to Play at La Quinta

Jimmy Connors’ default from the Lipton International Players Championship Friday will not affect his participation in the Pilot Pen tournament that begins Monday at the La Quinta Hotel Tennis Club near Palm Springs.

Connors may face a suspension of 21 days to one year and a fine up to $20,000 for his behavior. A spokeswoman for the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council contacted at the tournament in Boca Raton, Florida said even if the council takes action early next week, Connors has a 10-day appeal period.

“There is no way it can affect him for La Quinta,” she said. “If he is suspended, it would take place the Monday after the appeal period. He hasn’t said anything about not going. He’s laughing about it now.”

A spokeswoman for the La Quinta tournament said they had no indications that Connors would not play. “He’ll be here,” she said.
