New Charges Filed Against Minnesota Players

Share

A dozen new charges were filed Friday in Madison, Wis., against three former University of Minnesota basketball players accused of rape. A judge set a trial date in May.

The defendants--Kevin Smith, Mitchell Lee and George Williams--stood mute. Dane County Circuit Judge George Northrup entered innocent pleas for each to the new charges.

Six additional counts of first-degree sexual assault were filed against Lee, four more against Smith and two more against Williams. All had previously been charged with one count.

They are accused of repeatedly assaulting an 18-year-old woman early Jan. 24 in a Madison hotel room. Judith Hawley, Dane County assistant district attorney, said that the new charges were based on additional information that surfaced since the original charges were filed.
