The World : Reagan Writes Gorbachev
President Reagan, in a letter to Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev, is calling for elimination of medium-range missiles in Europe as a “constructive first step” toward worldwide curbs on the nuclear arms race, the Associated Press quoted an unnamed U.S. official as saying. Reagan is planning a statement to the nation on the subject Wednesday. Reagan’s decision was reportedly described as based on the advice of most of his senior arms control experts, who see an agreement on medium-range missiles as the most likely way to move the Geneva negotiations off dead center.
