The United States is about to launch a new series of large-scale military exercises in Honduras, including an engineering project to carve out a new airstrip near the Nicaraguan border, Pentagon sources said Tuesday.

The sources, who agreed to discuss the matter only if not identified, said the exercises would be conducted in stages over the next several months and would begin shortly.

One exercise will involve the construction of an earthen airstrip in Honduras’ Gracias a Dios province, probably near the village of Mocoron, that will be capable of handling C-130 transports, one source said. The strip will be located in eastern Honduras, not far from the Caribbean coast and just north of the Coco River that forms the boundary with Nicaragua, the source said.
