A “smooth-talking” convicted rapist who volunteered to help a San Francisco rape crisis center was arrested in Los Angeles on charges of assault and attempted rape, the FBI said. David E. Babb, 27, was captured by police without incident in Hollywood, FBI special agent Richard Held said. Babb is wanted in an alleged assault and attempted rape of a 23-year-old Berkeley woman in San Francisco. In 1985, Babb convinced leaders of the San Francisco office of Women Against Rape he was sensitive to rape issues and volunteered to produce a 30-second television spot promoting rape crisis counseling. He reportedly made a tape but was never seen again by the group.
