A Brazilian court judge has ruled that the French film “Hail Mary” by Jean-Luc Godard is to be released for general viewing on a temporary basis.

Judge Antonio Augusto Catao Alves’s decision temporarily overturned President Jose Sarney’s ban on the screening of the film earlier this month, following protests by leaders of Brazil’s powerful Roman Catholic church.

In Brasilia, a spokesman for the Justice Ministry said Minister Paulo Brossard would abide by the judge’s decision if no protests were made.

Under the terms of the judge’s decision, after its first general viewing, anyone against the film’s release will have 30 days to submit a protest.
