Mahony’s bid to mediate the Hilton dispute failed.

Los Angeles Catholic Archbishop Roger Mahony’s attempt to mediate who will benefit from Conrad N. Hilton’s estate ended without success following a 90-minute meeting involving Hilton’s son Barron, Donald Hubbs, president of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and a deputy state attorney general. The executor of the estate, James Bates, refused to attend the meeting. The breakdown of the talks indicates that the case will probably go to trial March 17 as scheduled. “Our discussions have led me to conclude that this is not an opportune time to reach a settlement,” Mahony said in a prepared statement.
