A West German magazine has received an ancient Inca mummy through the mail along with a plea to ease poverty in Peru, police said Wednesday.

The mummy arrived in a brown cardboard box at the offices of the weekly Bunte, on Monday.

Police declined to identify the sender but confirmed there was an accompanying letter saying the writer had been to Peru and was moved by the poverty there to seek help.

Archeologists were examining the mummy to determine its age, the police spokesman said. He was unable to say whether it would be returned to South America.

“We are investigating whether it is a criminal offense to import a mummy into West Germany,” the spokesman said.
