Odetics Inc. of Anaheim said Friday that it has received a contract worth nearly $9.8 million--its largest contract ever--to build four space-borne digital magnetic tape recorders.

Odetics would not name the customer or give details about the contract because it did not know how long it would take to get the other company’s approval for a joint press release, said Bill Prichard, public relations manager for Odetics.

The contract is the largest since its 1984 contract with Westinghouse Electric Corp. for $7.8 million, Prichard said.

The company’s High Data Rate Recorders, which have been used in manned and unmanned satellites and shuttle missions, stores and transmits a variety of information, including the results of scientific experiments aboard shuttle missions, Prichard said.
