At least one Marquette University basketball player has been subjected to spot checks for drugs, the Racine Journal Times reported in a copyright story in its Sunday edition.

The newspaper quoted team sources as saying that Warrior Coach Rick Majerus last summer had junior forward Mike Davis sign a contract that called for the player to submit to random drug tests administered by David Leigh, the men’s trainer at Marquette. A positive test would result in Davis’ dismisal from the team.

Davis has been tested “about five times” this season, according to a source, and was clean in each instance, the newspaper said.

According to the newspaper, interviews with “five current and former Warrior players and others closely affiliated with the basketball program” indicated that the use of illegal drugs, particularly marijuana, was a problem on the basketball team.

Both Majerus and Marquette sports information director Betsey Van Sickle were unavailable for comment Saturday night.
