Santa Ana : Zoo to Offer Course for Volunteer Guides

Share

If working with macaques and gibbons sounds like fun, then you belong at the zoo.

Curators at the Santa Ana Zoo will begin a three-week course Tuesday for volunteers willing to work part time as docents--aides who serve primarily as guides for zoo visitors. The docents will be given three hours of instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays and be required to commit at least six hours a week for a year.

After touring the zoo, which contains more than 100 types of animals, volunteers will attend classes in such areas as animal behavior, anatomy and endangered species. The only cost of the program is a $10 membership in the Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo, a fund-raising organization.

Associate curator Jennifer Rigby said that 11 people have volunteered so far and that she hopes to attract at least 20 to round out the program. She asked that would-be docents call (714) 836-4000 to reserve a space in the classes.
