Notice Given of Saudi Arms Sale

WASHINGTON — President Reagan notified Congress today of his intention to sell Saudi Arabia $354 million in advanced missiles, but supporters of Israel in the Senate immediately launched an effort to block the sale.
White House spokesman Larry Speakes told reporters that the sale is necessary to allow Saudi Arabia “to meet its valid security requirements.” But Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee, announced he will introduce a resolution to disapprove the sale if the Administration follows up on its so-called prenotification in the next 20 days with formal notification.
