WASHINGTON — President Reagan said today he likes what his hard-line speech writer Patrick J. Buchanan says about those who oppose a new aid program for the Nicaraguan rebels.
Buchanan has caused consternation on Capitol Hill by contending that in opposing aid “the national Democratic Party has now become, with Moscow, co-guarantor of the Brezhnev Doctrine in Central America.”
Asked whether he was going to “tone down” Buchanan’s rhetoric, Reagan grinned and said, “I like what he says.”
Reagan made the remark in response to a question from reporters as he was saying goodby to Central American special envoy Philip C. Habib.
Buchanan, an ardent conservative, has become the point man for the Administration in the uphill struggle to win approval of $100 million in aid for the contra rebels.
