A French physician on an unofficial mission to free some of his countrymen from Shia Muslim kidnapers went underground in West Beirut on Tuesday, saying he was on his way to “prevent further carnage.”

Razah Raad, a Lebanese-born heart specialist who is the only man the kidnapers say they will negotiate with, rushed to Beirut from Damascus after the terrorist group Islamic Jihad released photographs purporting to prove that the group has killed Michel Seurat, one of four French hostages it claimed to hold.
