Local News in Brief : Gas in Sewers Closes 6 Toluca Lake Blocks

Share

Firefighters used high-pressure hoses Friday morning to flush out about 10 gallons of gasoline apparently dumped in Toluca Lake storm sewers, authorities said.

A six-block area south of Warner Boulevard and Rose Avenue was cordoned off from 9:50 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. while the sewers were being treated, but no residents were evacuated, said Burbank Fire Capt. Richard W. Fisher.

It was the second time in a week that gasoline was found in San Fernando Valley storm drains. About 100 people in a two-block area of Van Nuys were forced out of their homes last Saturday night when gasoline fumes became trapped in storm drains. Fire officials believe the gas seeped from underground tanks at one of two nearby service stations.

The incident Friday is being blamed on illegal dumping because the neighborhood is residential and there are no obvious sources for the gasoline, Fisher said.
