Worth Established

Share

As we noted in an editorial 15 years ago when the Board of Supervisors created the Orange County Human Relations Commission on a trial basis: “The county board gave the new commission life--but little else. No funds. No Power. And only one year to prove its worth.”

The fact that the commission will be observing its 15th anniversary at an awards dinner Saturday attests to how well the commission has functioned as a conciliatory force for equal rights--and how much it is still needed.

The commission has helped identify problems and “informally” resolve them before they grew out of proportion. It has quietly settled some disputes and been a forum where others regarding rights in housing, employment, education, health and police relations could be openly discussed and mediated.

In its 15 years, the commission has more than proved its worth.
