Michael C. Janeway resigned as editor of the Boston Globe, one year after assuming command of the nation’s 15th-largest newspaper. Executive Editor John F. Driscoll will assume the duties of editor.
Insiders said Janeway’s tenure was marked by low staff morale and loss of ground to the once-moribund Boston Herald. According to recent circulation figures, the Globe is still leading with daily circulation of about 509,500, compared to the Herald’s 355,300, but it had lost more than 10,000 subscribers during the previous year while the Herald gained 11,700.
The Globe also lost some advertising to the Herald and has recently been beaten on some stories. Staff members also complained about Janeway’s style differing from Thomas Winship, the colorful Boston newsman who turned the Globe into one of the country’s most respected papers.
